Hayward TriStar vs Pentair IntelliFlo

Intro

This page is for a buyer who has already narrowed the decision to two pump families — Hayward's TriStar line and Pentair's IntelliFlo line — and now needs to pick the right model within each before comparing brands. Both lines include variable-speed pumps built for in-ground pools and spas, but they are not sized or controlled the same way.

The TriStar lineup here runs from a single-speed base pump up through several Omni- and EnduraDrive-controlled variable-speed units. The IntelliFlo lineup here is variable speed (or variable speed + flow) on every model, with no single-speed option, and its horsepower band extends higher than TriStar's does. Sizing the pump correctly matters more than the badge on the housing.

How the two lines are built

Hayward's TriStar lineup starts with a single-speed pump at 1.1 THP and steps up through variable-speed models at 1.85 THP and 2.25 THP to a top model at 2.7 THP. Control on the variable models is split between two approaches: the VS 900 Omni and VS 950 Omni publish a Permanent Magnet TEFC / EnduraDrive™ motor running 600–3,450 RPM, while the VS 820 Omnix is the one listing Hayward's Omni wiring base unit, smart relay and control pad, with Amazon Alexa compatibility; the XE-branded pumps instead offer up to six selectable speeds. Warranty terms also differ inside the line — some models publish a single combined warranty, others publish separate Parts and Labor warranty terms.

Pentair's IntelliFlo lineup published here is variable speed or variable speed + flow across every model, with no single-speed entry point. It spans 1.5 THP up to 3.95 THP. Control is built around flow-rate targets — the 1.5 THP model is rated for a 20–90 GPM flow range and the 3 THP models for 20–140 GPM — with WiFi/Bluetooth app control on the entry model, a touchscreen on one 3 THP model, a relay board on another, and the top IntelliFloXF model offering 8 speed/flow settings plus a built-in timer.

Hayward TriStar

Hayward TriStar® Pool Pump 1.1 THP

The TriStar line covers the widest range of buyer needs within one family, from a basic single-speed 1.1 THP pump (SP3200X10) for a straightforward in-ground pool, up to variable-speed models at 1.85 THP and 2.25 THP, to the 2.7 THP VS 950 Omni at the top. The VS 820 Omnix is the model listing Hayward's Omni hardware — a wiring base unit, smart relay and control pad are included — along with Amazon Alexa compatibility. The VS 900 Omni and VS 950 Omni instead publish a Permanent Magnet TEFC / EnduraDrive™ motor with a Viton® chemical-resistant seal, and NSF, Energy Star and cULus certification. The XE models (1.85 THP and 2.25 THP) offer up to six selectable speeds and publish Weighted Energy Factor ratings of 8.5/8.4 and 8.7/7.2 respectively. The VS 950 Omni is the only TriStar model here with a stated 4-Year warranty; others publish a 3-Year single warranty or a 3-Year Parts / 1-Year Labor split.

Pentair IntelliFlo

Pentair IntelliFlo3® VSF Pool Pump 1.5 THP 115/208-230V

The IntelliFlo3 VSF at 1.5 THP is built for app-based control, with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth through the Pentair Home App, a 20–90 GPM flow range, and a 9.4 WEF rating. The two 3 THP IntelliFlo3 VSF models cover the same 20–140 GPM flow range and 7.1 WEF rating, but differ in interface — one adds a relay board, the other a touchscreen display. The IntelliFloXF, at the top of this lineup, pairs a 3 HP motor with a separate 3.95 THP total-output rating, and adds 8 speed/flow programmable settings with a built-in timer — the highest total horsepower figure in either line compared on this page.

The verdict

Choose the Hayward TriStar SP3200X10 if you need a straightforward single-speed 1.1 THP pump and don't need variable-speed control at all — no IntelliFlo model here offers a single-speed option. Choose the TriStar VS 820 Omnix if you want the Omni wiring base unit, smart relay and control pad in the box with Amazon Alexa compatibility; choose the VS 900 Omni at 1.85 THP or the VS 950 Omni at 2.7 THP for the EnduraDrive™ motor and NSF, Energy Star and cULus certification. Choose a TriStar XE model if you want six selectable speeds without the Omni hardware, at the same horsepower points. On the Pentair side, choose the IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5 THP model if built-in WiFi/Bluetooth app control matters and your flow needs sit in the 20–90 GPM range. Choose one of the 3 THP IntelliFlo3 VSF models if you need the 20–140 GPM flow range, picking the touchscreen version for onboard display or the relay-board version otherwise. Choose the IntelliFloXF if you need the highest total horsepower on this page — 3.95 THP — with 8 speed/flow programmable settings. If warranty length is a deciding factor, note that the TriStar VS 950 Omni is the only model here with a stated 4-Year single warranty, while IntelliFlo warranties on these models range from 1 to 3 Years.
