Best Variable Speed Pool Pumps for Inground Pools

A variable-speed pump matters on an inground pool because the motor can be programmed to run at low RPM for most of the day and only ramp up for cleaning or heating cycles, which is what separates the pumps below from a single-speed unit. Every pump here is variable-speed; what actually separates them is total horsepower (THP), how the speed is set (selectable speeds, programmable schedules, or speed-plus-flow control), voltage, and warranty length.

Horsepower on these spec sheets is not one number. Some listings publish Total Horsepower (THP), a couple publish Horsepower under a THP-qualified label, and two publish a plain nameplate motor Horsepower figure alongside a separate THP figure. Where a pump publishes both, this page states both and says which is which — a motor HP figure and a THP figure describe different things and are never interchangeable.

Weighted Energy Factor (WEF), where published, is a useful cross-check on efficiency at a given THP, but three of the pumps below do not list a WEF on their spec sheet, and that gap is called out rather than filled in.

Pentair IntelliFloXF® Variable Speed Pump 3 HP 230V 3.95 THP Variable Speed + Flow 230V 3 Years

Pentair IntelliPro3® VSF Pool Pump with Relay 1.5 THP 115/208-230V

This is the lowest-THP pump on this list at 1.5 THP, and it carries the highest published Weighted Energy Factor here, 9.4. It runs on either 115V or 208–230V, ships with a relay board included, and is rated for a 20–90 GPM flow range at up to 20 PSI max working pressure. It carries a 3-year warranty.

Hayward TriStar® XE Variable Speed Pump 1.85 THP 115/230V

The TriStar XE is rated 1.85 THP and controls speed through up to six selectable speeds rather than a flow-based algorithm. Its WEF is listed separately by voltage: 8.5 on 230V and 8.4 on 115V. It runs on 115V or 230V at 60 Hz, is rated to 50 PSI max working pressure, and carries a 3-year warranty.

Pentair SuperMax® VS Variable Speed Pump 1.5HP 115/208-230V

The SuperMax VS publishes two separate horsepower figures: a 1.5 HP motor rating (nameplate) and a 2.2 THP total horsepower rating — these are not the same quantity. Speed is set through 3 programmable settings plus an override and a 24-hour clock, running at 450–3,450 RPM across 115V, 208V, or 230V. It is Energy Star and Eco-Select certified and carries a 2-year warranty, the shortest of the Pentair models here.

Hayward TriStar® VS 950 Omni Variable Speed Pump 2.7 THP 230V

Rated 2.7 THP, the VS 950 Omni runs on 230V single phase only and spins from 600 to 3,450 RPM. It uses a permanent-magnet TEFC EnduraDrive motor with a Viton chemical-resistant seal, and it carries a 4-year warranty, the longest of any pump on this page. Our data does not list a WEF for this model.

Pentair IntelliFlo3® VSF Pump with Relay Board 3 THP 208-230V

The IntelliFlo3 VSF is rated 3 THP with the widest published flow range here, 20–140 GPM, at up to 30 PSI max working pressure, and it lists a WEF of 7.1. It runs on 208–230V, draws up to 12.4 A with a max wattage of 2,590 W, and is NSF and UL certified. Its warranty is 1 year, shorter than every other pump in this shortlist.

Pentair IntelliFloXF® Variable Speed Pump 3 HP 230V

The IntelliFloXF publishes a 3 HP motor rating (nameplate) separate from its 3.95 THP total horsepower figure, the highest THP on this page. It offers 8 programmable speed/flow settings with a built-in timer, runs on 230V, draws up to 16 A at up to 3,200 W max, and plumbs to either 2.5 in or 3 in with included union connectors. It is Energy Star certified and carries a 3-year warranty. Our data does not list a WEF for this model.

The verdict

If minimizing energy use per the published WEF is the priority and the pool doesn't need high flow, the IntelliPro3 VSF's 1.5 THP and 9.4 WEF make it the smallest, most efficient option here. If the pool needs a bit more total horsepower with simple selectable-speed control rather than a programmed flow curve, the TriStar XE at 1.85 THP fits that case. Where scheduling flexibility matters more than raw WEF, the SuperMax VS's 3 programmable settings and 24-hour clock, paired with its 2.2 THP rating, support that use, though its 2-year warranty is shorter than several alternatives. For larger inground pools where warranty length matters, the TriStar VS 950 Omni's 2.7 THP and 4-year warranty stand out, but it is limited to 230V single phase. If the system needs the widest published flow range for a larger pool or spa combination, the IntelliFlo3 VSF's 20–140 GPM range and 3 THP support that, with the trade-off of a 1-year warranty. Where the highest total horsepower and programmable speed/flow settings are required, the IntelliFloXF's 3.95 THP and 8 speed/flow programs are the largest and most configurable specs on this list.
