Intro
Buyers comparing Hayward and Pentair pool pumps are usually deciding two things at the same time: which brand to standardize on, and whether to buy a single-speed pump or a variable-speed one. Both brands sell across that whole range, from basic single-speed workhorses to app- and automation-connected variable-speed units, so brand and speed type are separate decisions.
The real differences between the two brands show up in how they document horsepower, what automation ecosystem they connect to, and which motor technology they use on their higher-end variable-speed models. Below we compare only the specs both brands publish, and call out where a spec exists for one brand but not the other.

Variable speed vs single speed
Single-speed pumps run at one fixed RPM whenever they're powered, sized to the motor's nameplate rating. Variable-speed pumps let you program lower speeds for everyday filtration and higher speeds for spa jets or vacuuming, which is where most of the energy savings on these pages come from.
On the Hayward side, the TriStar® Pool Pump 1.1 THP is the single-speed option. Everything else in this lineup is variable: the TriStar® VS 900 Omni runs 1.85 THP across 600–3,450 RPM, the TriStar® VS 950 Omni runs 2.7 THP across the same RPM band, and the TriStar® XE models (1.85 THP and 2.25 THP) use up to six selectable speeds instead of a stated RPM range. The VS 820 Omnix adds Alexa voice control on top of its 2.25 THP variable-speed motor.
On the Pentair side, the SuperFlo® and SuperMax® single-speed pumps both publish two horsepower figures for the same pump: the SuperFlo® is 0.69 HHP (hydraulic horsepower) with 1.1 THP (total horsepower), and the SuperMax® is 0.63 HHP with 1.1 THP — HHP and THP are different measurements, not two ways of writing the same number. Pentair's variable-speed lineup spans the IntelliFlo3® VSF at 1.5 THP, the SuperFlo® VST and SuperMax® VS — each built around a 1.5 HP motor rated at 2.2 THP total — up to the IntelliPro3® VSF at 3 THP and the IntelliFloXF® built around a 3 HP motor rated at 3.95 THP total.
Hayward
Hayward's lineup here runs from the single-speed TriStar® 1.1 THP up through the Omni-connected VS 900, VS 820, and VS 950 pumps and the XE series. The Omni models (VS 900, VS 820, VS 950) share a Permanent Magnet TEFC / EnduraDrive™ motor, a Viton® chemical-resistant seal, and Hayward's Omni automation; the VS 820 Omnix is the only one with Alexa voice control listed. The VS 900 and VS 950 are also the only models here carrying NSF, Energy Star, and cULus certification, and the VS 950 carries a 4-year warranty, longer than the 3-year term on the VS 900 and XE 1.85 THP.
Pentair
Pentair's range covers single-speed SuperFlo® and SuperMax® pumps (both rated in HHP and THP) up through variable-speed and variable-speed-plus-flow models. The IntelliFlo3® VSF lists a flow rate range of 20–90 GPM and adds app or WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity through the Pentair Home App. The IntelliPro3® VSF is the highest-THP pump in this set at 3 THP and ships with a relay board included. The SuperFlo® VST and SuperMax® VS sit in between, each pairing a 1.5 HP motor with a 2.2 THP total rating.
The verdict
Choose Hayward if you want a single automation ecosystem: the Omni-based VS 900, VS 820, and VS 950 tie speed control, and in the VS 820's case Alexa, into one system, and the VS 900/VS 950 carry the broadest certifications (NSF, Energy Star, cULus) in this comparison. Choose Pentair if you want app-based control or the widest horsepower range in one lineup — the IntelliFlo3® VSF and IntelliFloXF® add WiFi/Bluetooth or built-in timer programming, and the IntelliFloXF®'s 3.95 THP is the highest total horsepower figure either brand publishes here. If you're buying single-speed and comparing on price alone, check whether the number you're looking at is HHP or THP before comparing pumps — Pentair's SuperFlo® and SuperMax® single-speed models publish both, Hayward's TriStar® 1.1 THP publishes only THP.
