How is the Quad D.E. different from a traditional D.E. filter?
Traditional D.E. filters use flat or curved grids that must be backwashed and periodically torn down as an assembly for cleaning. The Quad D.E. uses four removable cartridge elements coated with D.E. powder — when it's time to clean, you simply pull out the four cartridges and rinse them off, much like cleaning a standard cartridge filter. The D.E. powder provides the same 3–5 micron filtration of a traditional D.E. filter without the complex grid teardowns.
Does the Quad D.E. require backwashing?
The Quad D.E. supports backwashing for routine cleaning cycles, but also allows removing and hosing off the cartridges directly — giving you more flexibility than a traditional D.E. filter. Backwashing alone may not clean the cartridges as thoroughly as removal and rinsing.
How much D.E. powder is needed and when do I add it?
The Quad D.E. 80 requires 8 lb of D.E. powder at initial startup and after each cleaning. D.E. powder is added through the skimmer while the pump is running — it flows through the system and coats the cartridge elements. Use only pool-grade diatomaceous earth.
