Hayward vs Pentair Pool Heaters

Intro

Hayward and Pentair are the two gas and dual-fuel heater lines we stock, and the decision usually comes down to three things: what fuel and heat exchanger the pool needs, how much BTU output the pad requires, and whether the buyer wants a published thermal efficiency number to work from.

Hayward's Universal H-Series and HC Series heaters share a common digital display and automation platform (OmniX) across every model, natural gas or dual-fuel, and use a cupro-nickel heat exchanger on the HC Series dual-fuel units. Hayward's spec sheets do not publish a thermal efficiency percentage for any model in this lineup.

Pentair's MasterTemp and Max-E-Therm lines publish thermal efficiency on every model, and split into standard cupro-nickel-free construction and HD (heavy-duty, cupro-nickel tubing) variants at different efficiency ratings. Pentair also documents flow rate, gas connection size, voltage, and cabinet dimensions in more detail than Hayward does.

Hayward

Hayward Universal H-Series Above-Ground Natural Gas Heater with OmniX 135K

Every Hayward model in this lineup runs on the same OmniX Embedded Intelligence and Hayward Universal Display, and all are described as compatible with Omni, OmniX, and competitive automation systems — so a buyer standardizing controls across a pad gets one interface regardless of BTU size. The HS135FDN is built for above-ground pool or spa duty (also rated for commercial pool use), the W3HS150FDN targets in-ground installs, and the HS250FDNASME adds ASME certification for commercial applications requiring it.

The HC Series units (HDFS275 and HDFS400) are dual-fuel — natural gas or liquid propane — and use a cupro-nickel heat exchanger, which is the construction pool professionals reach for when water chemistry is aggressive (salt systems, low pH, high bather load). Both HC Series models also require zero wall clearance and carry a three-year parts warranty, longer than the two-year parts coverage on the smaller H-Series units. Hayward's spec sheets do not give a thermal efficiency percentage for any of these models, so we can't compare that figure directly against Pentair's published numbers.

Pentair

Pentair MasterTemp® Natural Gas High Performance Heater with Cord 125K BTU

Pentair publishes thermal efficiency on every model here, which lets you compare operating cost expectations directly. The MasterTemp 461059 (125,000 BTU, natural gas) and the Max-E-Therm 200 HD (200,000 BTU) both list 82% thermal efficiency, while the non-HD Max-E-Therm 333 (333,000 BTU) lists 84%. The Max-E-Therm 400 HD, also 82%, uses cupro-nickel tubing (HD), the same trade Hayward makes on its HC Series: the cupro-nickel tubing on the SR200HD and SR400HD resists salt and harsh chemistry but costs efficiency points compared to the non-HD SR333NA.

Pentair also documents flow rate, gas connection size, voltage, cabinet dimensions, and control type for each unit, and the Max-E-Therm and MasterTemp lines are CSA certified and carry Dura-Glas or rustproof enclosures. The 460735 is a straight liquid propane unit at 300,000 BTU for sites without natural gas service.

The verdict

Choose Pentair if you want a documented thermal efficiency number to plan against, or if you specifically need the non-HD Max-E-Therm 333 at 84% efficiency for a pool with mild water chemistry. Choose the Pentair HD models (SR200HD, SR400HD) when you need cupro-nickel tubing but still want Pentair's published efficiency and CSA certification.

Choose Hayward if you want a single OmniX-based control interface across every BTU size, need dual-fuel flexibility (HDFS275, HDFS400) with zero wall clearance, need ASME certification for a commercial job (HS250FDNASME), or want the longer three-year parts warranty on the HC Series. If a hard efficiency percentage is a purchase requirement, Hayward's sheets don't provide one for any model in this set — go with Pentair for that comparison.
