To troubleshoot pool heater ignition without creating a larger repair, begin with the conditions that allow the heater to fire: adequate water flow, correct power, a valid heat demand, and an available fuel supply. Most ignition faults are not caused by the igniter itself.
Before You Troubleshoot Pool Heater Ignition
Turn off power at the heater's service disconnect before removing any access panel. If your heater uses natural gas or propane and you smell gas, do not try to restart it. Shut off the gas supply if it is safe to do so, leave the area, and contact your gas utility or a qualified pool-heater technician.
Do not bypass a pressure switch, high-limit switch, rollout switch, fuse, or any other safety control to see whether the heater will light. Once water flow is confirmed, verify that fuel can reach the heater. For natural gas units, make sure the manual gas shutoff valve is parallel with the gas pipe, which generally indicates it is open. Check whether other gas appliances are working, but do not use a stove or lighter as a gas-leak test.
For propane heaters, confirm the tank has fuel and the service valve is fully open. Propane systems can lose pressure during cold weather, at low tank levels, or when a heater is undersized for the gas supply setup. Look around the heater for blocked air intake or exhaust vents, leaf buildup, insect nests, snow, landscaping growth, or stored items too close to the cabinet. Modern induced-draft heaters use a blower and pressure switch to verify safe airflow before ignition. If the blower cannot move air correctly, the controls should prevent the gas valve from opening.
A visible obstruction can be cleared with the heater powered off, but do not disassemble the combustion system or adjust gas controls. Internal venting, pressure-switch tubing, gas valves, and burner components need model-specific testing equipment and procedures.
Read the Error Code Before Resetting
The display message is often the best diagnostic tool you have. Write down the exact code before turning power off or pressing reset. Error descriptions differ by manufacturer and model, so the same general wording can point to different components.
Common messages include low water flow, high limit, pressure switch open, ignition failure, flame failure, blower error, and temperature sensor fault. A code that appears immediately usually indicates a failed safety check early in the startup sequence. A code that appears after clicking or flame ignition points later in the sequence.
A single reset after correcting an obvious issue, such as a closed valve or low pump speed, is reasonable. Repeated resets are not a repair strategy. If a heater locks out again, it is reporting a condition that needs to be found and corrected.
What the Startup Sequence Can Tell You
A typical gas heater follows a predictable order: it receives a call for heat, verifies water flow and safety switches, starts the blower if equipped, confirms airflow, energizes the igniter, opens the gas valve, and verifies flame. When the sequence stops, the symptom matters.
If nothing happens beyond the display, look first at controls, power, water flow, or an open safety circuit. If the blower runs but there is no spark or glow from the igniter, the issue may involve the igniter, ignition control, wiring, or a required airflow signal.

Not every pool heating problem belongs to a gas heater. A heat pump does not use a burner or igniter. It uses a compressor, fan, refrigerant circuit, and flow controls. If you own a heat pump and it will not heat, check water flow, thermostat settings, air temperature, electrical supply, and displayed fault codes instead of searching for ignition parts.
Even with a gas heater, a unit that ignites but delivers only modest temperature gains may be operating normally. These symptoms can involve combustion safety, gas supply, electrical controls, or heat-exchanger condition.
Professional service is also the right choice when the problem requires testing voltage under load, checking gas manifold pressure, inspecting burner alignment, verifying venting, diagnosing circuit boards, or replacing safety switches. The cost of proper diagnosis is usually lower than replacing several parts based on a guess.
