A gas pool heater creates heat by burning natural gas or propane. It sends pool water through a heat exchanger, then returns that water to the pool at a higher temperature. Because it generates its own heat, a gas heater can raise water temperature quickly in nearly any outdoor condition.
A heat pump does not create heat by burning fuel. It draws warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it into the pool water through a refrigeration process. It runs on electricity, but its efficiency comes from moving ambient heat rather than producing all of the heat it delivers.
That distinction drives the biggest practical trade-off. Gas heaters provide speed and cold-weather flexibility. Heat pumps generally provide lower day-to-day heating costs in warm, moderate climates, but they need favorable air temperatures and more time to do their work.
When a Gas Pool Heater Is the Better Choice
A gas heater is built for pool owners who want heat on demand. If you decide on Friday that the pool needs to be ready for a weekend gathering, a properly sized gas unit can make a meaningful temperature change in hours, not days. This is particularly valuable for pools that are not heated continuously.
Gas heat also performs well when air temperatures fall. Early spring, late fall, chilly nights, and colder regions can reduce a heat pump's output and efficiency. A gas heater remains a dependable option because its heating capacity is far less dependent on outdoor air temperature.
